Safe Harbor Internship Program

Safe Harbor International Ministries offers students a chance to learn and apply new, transferable skills through the positions offered in our internship program — all from the comfort of their own home. These remote, online positions provide them with lifelong skills and invaluable experiences.
We train students from all over the United States in many areas, including: Social media, Marketing, Fundraising, Blogging, Office Administration, Human Resources (HR), Social Work, Web Design, and Volunteer Management.
As the online program grows, we are adding more internship opportunities and expanding our online internship program so we can invest in preparing more students for the future.
Our goal is to teach our interns proper knowledge that can be applied throughout their future careers and prepare them with the ability to handle situations appropriately within their future workplaces. We believe in giving interns an opportunity to work on projects to prepare, equip, and train them to work in the real world.

Examples of some projects that our interns will work on are:
- Program writing

- Learning how to utilize WordPress to revise and improve web pages
- Creating/managing social media content and platforms
- Working with victims of abuse
- Leading online support groups (mentoring victims of trauma)

About Us
Safe Harbor International Ministries is a domestic violence and resource training center that provides family intervention services for the greater Atlanta, Georgia area and its surrounding counties.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide family restoration through promoting emotional, spiritual, and physical healing by offering victim advocacy services, counseling, mentoring, training programs, educational, and social service initiatives to transform the lives of men, women, and children.
Intern & Volunteer Coordinator
Rebecca Kochanek
Rebecca is a second-year intern who has a deep passion for leadership, mentorship, and inclusiveness. Her enneagram type 4 self values authenticity in every way. Right now, she resides in Ohio with her husband, daughter, and two cats.
Rebecca is a college graduate with a Bachelor’s in Communications and Sociology. Her hobbies include writing, blogging, thrift shopping, drinking tea, and learning. Rebecca is currently working on becoming a birth doula. She says that, “my enthusiasm for learning is a strength that I pride myself in greatly.”

Social Media Team
Jess Tlacuatl, Social Media, High School Intern
Jessica (“Jess”) is super excited to be part of Safe Harbor’s intern program. Jess was born and raised in a small town called Weehawken. She is attending Weehawken High School, where she is a senior. Being part of Safe Harbor’s intern program will encourage Jess to pursue her all time dream of majoring in psychology. She believes that having this great opportunity as a senior in high school will open more doors for other teens who have encountered and experienced challenging situations.
Office Administration Team
Madison Ford, Office Admin
Madison is from Woodbridge, Virginia. She recently graduated from The University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health and a minor in Public Policy. Madison is currently seeking to get a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Health Policy and Management from Georgia State University.
Madison wants to work with national policy and healthcare and research topics having to do with LGBTQ+ healthcare, maternal health, and cognitive health. She plans to go to law school to become a Health Policy lawyer and hopes to help solve most of the healthcare issues with new policies that will make all healthcare equal.
Madison chose to work with Safe Harbor International Ministries because of the amazing work it does to provide resources to domestic violence victims.
Brittany Duca, Office Admin
Brittany is originally from a small town in Northern Indiana, but currently lives in Evansville, Indiana where she is a senior at The University of Southern Indiana majoring in Public Relations and Advertising with a Minor in Marketing.
When Brittany heard about the Safe Harbor International Ministries internship, it clicked with her almost instantly. Brittany had been looking for a way to combine what she has been studying with a ministry, and at Safe Harbor she feels she is able to do that. Brittany also really felt pulled to SHIM because she wanted to truly help others, and because of the great opportunities offered at Safe Harbor it is a great fit!
Leidy De La Cruz, Office Admin, High School Intern
Leidy was born on the beautiful island of the Dominican Republic, which is probably where her love for baseball came from. Because of where she was born, she has seen families who are struggling. Leidy was drawn to Safe Harbor International Ministries because of the work they do with domestic violence victims. She strongly believes that she can help make a difference in the lives of others through interning with Safe Harbor.
Leidy also enjoys binge-watching shows and creating new recipes. Cooking has always been a passion of hers.

Sydni Brown, Web Team
Sydni brown is born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is heading into her senior year at Oral Roberts University where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Technology with a minor in Media. Sydni has a career interest in developing applications to help businesses reach clients.
She chose to intern with Safe Harbor for the opportunity to learn and grow personally, spiritually, and professionally.
Sydni loves to go shoe shopping, paint, discover new music, and watch Pixar movies.

Elina Paraschou, HR
Elina Paraschou is from Greece, but she currently lives in Memphis, TN. She is a Junior at Rhodes College, majoring in Business with a minor in Russian. Elina chose to do an internship with Safe Harbor because she is impressed with the work culture and ethics. After graduation, Elina would like to spend a year working and traveling around Europe.
Elina’s hobbies include learning foreign languages, contemporary dance and playing with her cats.
Internship Program Fundraising Needs
Currently, our internship programs are unpaid, but we are diligently working on modifying this for our current and future interns. Since they offer such a tremendous amount of value, we want to be able to properly compensate them for their hard work. Please help our internship programs continue to grow and help our interns to thrive by donating to our internship fund. This money will be go straight to our interns to help support and empower them in their journey of self-development. Elizabeth is from Cincinnati, OH. Elizabeth graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with focuses in Behavioral Sciences and Foreign Language. Now, she studies at Liberty University for her Master’s degree in Human Resources.
Jacob Howard, HR
Jacob is from Kinston, N.C., and attends North Carolina State University, where he is studying Human Resources Management with a minor in Spanish.
Julia Hoofnagle, Office Admin
Julia is originally from Denver, Colorado. She is currently a student at the University of Arizona, pursuing a degree in Philosophy with a minor in Communications.
Corrine Karlan, Office Admin
Corrine was born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida. She currently attends Florida Atlantic University where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration with a minor in Disaster Management and Nonprofit Management.

Samira is currently studying English Literature. She spends six months a year living and studying in Scotland, and she is back home in Germany for the other half of the year.

Shannon is a senior studying Health Sciences (with minors in Psychology and Health Psychology) at Northeastern University in Boston, MA.

Angel is from Jonesboro, Georgia. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications at University of West Georgia.

Amanda is from Fennville, a small town in West Michigan. She currently goes to Davenport University will graduate this December with her BBA in Business Management.
Mikayla Jackson, Social Media
Mikayla is from Opelika, Alabama. She is a senior at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Political Science.

Jackie is a Communication major at DePauw University. She is a swim captain for the women’s varsity team, a writer and editor for HerCampus branch, and the president and founder of DePauw’s Clay Club.

Grace grew up outside of Sacramento, California. She is pursuing a degree in Journalism Media Studies at San Diego State University.

Martin Lalanne is from Orlando Florida. He worked for the U.S Air Force as an Aviation Resource Manager, and recently graduated with a Bachelor’s in Technical Management.

Laura is Korean (South) and was born in New York. She graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.

Ines Ernst is from Argentina, but she is now living in Switzerland. She finished her studies at the Universidad de Belgrano in 2011.

Darrell is from Bronx, New York. He has a degree in Information Technology.

Jasmine is from Camden County, Georgia where she received her Master’s of Public Administration from The University of West Georgia.

I loved this internship so much, I couldn’t have asked for a better one for my first! Everyone is so genuinely kind, and caring, and although we are technically working you can tell the team members actually care about each other.
Grace Haass, Blogger
Working together with the team, sharing ideas and brainstorming together was a great experience for improving my skills. In addition, I really appreciated the wide variety of different projects I had the opportunity to work on- from creating video content, to researching hashtag and keyword usage, to managing Facebook groups.
There were some unfortunate logistical issues sometimes that hindered the team’s work, like being unable to sign in to Hootsuite or social media accounts. Not a big issue. Overall it was a great internship program.

I honestly loved this internship. I grew more than I was expecting in every way possible. Personally, I loved developing a relationship with Marquetta (Executive Director) where I felt safe to express my voice in every way. She genuinely cares about the interns and it shows. It was amazing to feel loved and supported for the past few months. She was such an amazing woman to work for and with. To improve the organization, they are working on fixing their google drive folders for new teams to find things easier. I think actively asking how things can be improved for the people involved is a great way to keep the interns working well together and learning how to give (and receive) feedback.

It was a great experience working for Safe Harbor International Ministries. I enjoyed working with a team on projects and getting real life experience with WordPress. I especially want to thank Darrell. He was a great partner and deserves a lot of credit. The only struggle that I had was finding times to meet with my teammates due to scheduling conflicts. However, I’m glad that I have this experience under my belt. Thank you!

I honestly do not think much could be changed to make it better. We have rolled out many new applications that will help new interns learn and communicate in a timely manner. Working on at least one project with another team during an internship really makes it feel like family in an organization and you get to learn things from someone else’s perspective.
